BICIKL teaches how to liberate data in Brazil

30 May 2023

The BiCIKL’s is riding far from Europe: in Brazil, namely.

Our partner, Plazi, delivered a course on “The Taxonomy Integrated to Digital Media - how to facilitate the access and reuse of taxonomic data by the scientific community” at Animal Biology PostGraduation of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS.

As all the Plazi courses, this one has been in consonance with BiCIKL's mission and vision, catalysing a change in the way biodiversity data is identified, linked, integrated, and re-used, and starting the creation of new communities of researchers and other stakeholders in the biodiversity sciences practising the FAIR data concepts.

“A Taxonomia Integrada aos Meios Digitais: como facilitar o acesso e a reutilização de dados taxonômicos pela comunidade científica" has been animated by 12 Postgraduate students (masters and doctorate students) from Animal Biology and Paleontology departments of the UFRGS in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

There have been theoretical-practical classes, using different virtual repositories of data on biodiversity, programs, and platforms for extracting and analyzing data taken from academic publications intended for virtual repositories, and carrying out exercises and challenges in the practical use of the tools used in class - some of them deriving from the BiCIKL project itself.

The course gave the participants the opportunity to start their certifications as data analysts and data liberators through Plazi’s platforms and has been partly financed by BiCIKL.
